چکیده

Consider the uncertainty about whether it will rain in Brisbane next weekend. A weather forecaster may be able to assess a precise probability of rain, such as 0.3285 . . . , although even an expert should feel uncomfortable about specifying a probability to more than one or two decimal places. Someone who has little information about the prospects for rain may be able to make only an imprecise judgment such as “it will probably not rain”, or “it is more likely to rain tomorrow than at the weekend”, or “the probability of rain is between 0.2 and 0.4”. People living outside Australia may be completely ignorant about the weather in Brisbane and assign lower probability 0 and upper probability 1. Probabilities based on extensive data can be distinguished, through their precision, from those based on ignorance. As a simple statistical example, consider an urn containing coloured balls. Initially nothing is known about the colours. How should we model the uncertainty about the colour of the next ball that will be drawn from the urn, and how should we update the model after some balls are sampled? Intuitively, because we are completely ignorant about the colours initially, all conceivable colours should be assigned lower probability 0 and upper probability 1. After repeated sampling with replacement, the posterior upper and lower probabilities of any colour should become increasingly precise and converge to the observed relative frequency of that colour. There are imprecise probability models for the learning process which have these properties, which treat all colours symmetrically, and which are coherent. Imprecise probability models are needed in many applications of probabilistic and statistical reasoning. They have been used in the following kinds of problems:

Computation with imprecise probabilities

An imprecise probability distribution is an instance of second-order uncertainty, that is, uncertainty about uncertainty, or uncertainty for short. Another instance is an imprecise possibility distribution. Computation with imprecise probabilities is not an academic exercise—it is a bridge to reality. In the real world, imprecise probabilities are the norm rather than exception. In large measur...

Empirical Interpretation of Imprecise Probabilities

This paper investigates the possibility of a frequentist interpretation of imprecise probabilities, by generalizing the approach of Bernoulli’s Ars Conjectandi. That is, by studying, in the case of games of chance, under which assumptions imprecise probabilities can be satisfactorily estimated from data. In fact, estimability on the basis of finite amounts of data is a necessary condition for i...

Stable Non-standard Imprecise Probabilities

Stability arises as the consistency criterion in a betting interpretation for hyperreal imprecise previsions, that is imprecise previsions (and probabilities) which may take infinitesimal values. The purpose of this work is to extend the notion of stable coherence introduced in [8] to conditional hyperreal imprecise probabilities. Our investigation extends the de Finetti-Walley operational char...

Imprecise probabilities based on generalized intervals for system reliability assessment

Di erent representations of imprecise probabilities have been proposed, where interval-valued probabilities are used such that uncertainty is distinguished from variability. In this paper, we present a new form of imprecise probabilities for reliability assessment based on generalized intervals. Generalized intervals have group properties under the Kaucher arithmetic, which provides a concise r...

Combining Binary Classifiers with Imprecise Probabilities

This paper proposes a simple framework to combine binary classifiers whose outputs are imprecise probabilities (or are transformed into some imprecise probabilities, e.g., by using confidence intervals). This combination comes down to solve linear programs describing constraints over events (here, subsets of classes). The number of constraints grows linearly with the number of classifiers, maki...

Decision Making with Monotone Lower Probabilities of Infinite Order

Properties of convex and monotone capacities of infinite order in Polish spaces are studied and used to justify the representation of certain situations of imprecise risk (imprecisely known probabilities) by lower probabilities, which are monotone of infinite order. Decision making with imprecise risk is then modeled, and linear utility theory is shown to be generalizable to the case of impreci...
